Dum Surfer- King Krule
‘Dum Surfer’ is maybe my one singular absolute favorite King Krule song. If I had a gun to my had and had to choose, the list that would cross my mind are ‘Logos’, ‘Emergency Blimp (Live)’, ‘Rock Bottom’, ‘Cellular’, ‘Cadet Limbo’, Underclass’, ‘Seagirl’, ‘From the Swamp’, and about 4 songs off of ‘‘6 Feet The Moon”. But if I take time to go back and listen, ‘Dum Surfer’ holds the throne for me.
It’s rough and jazzy, atmospheric and muddy with elements of psych alt rock; the bass line makes me stomp around my room like an ogre, the weird atmospheric synths that stab the song at random moments stimulate me in a way I think MDMA would. I love the chorus effect on his voice when he sings in that lower tone; the drum groove is almost reminiscent of a Bossa Nova-Jazz type of groove you’d here in a dim lit speakeasy after 2AM, only it’s 11pm and instead of a sultry red lighting, it’s blue and a feeling of youthful angst and “my parents don’t know I’m here”- don’t give a fuckery fills the room, so the groove is sped up. It’s simultaneously a song I can listen to on a late night drive with the windows down, and play on repeat in the background while I’m completing a task to help me lock in. This song has a beautiful guitar and saxophone solo, which is up there with the saxophones in ‘Cadet Limbo’ and ‘Underclass’.
Sonically, King Krule shat all over this song. Lyrically, it’s literally adult monster mash. It covers being drunk and gambling and lusting over women, it can really ruin your night when you realize that’s all you were out for.
